Tecnigas Silencer Repacking.

A step-by-step guide.

Is your Tecnigas exhaust system much louder than it used to be? Does it have leaks around the shell of the silencer? It may be time to repack the exhaust! In this easy to follow document, we show you everything that you need to know about repacking your Tecnigas silencer.

Note that often times when repacking is required after only putting a small amount of milage on an exhaust system, the carburetor could be adjusted slightly too rich. The oil mixture in the fuel could be on the heavy side as well.

Remove the 3 10mm locknuts that hold the silencer to the stinger. The clap that wraps around the silencer is also held on by a 10mm bolt.

The silencer then slides forward (away from the stinger). It can be a little stiff, but it does come off. If the gasket tears it will need to be replaced.

The best way to get the alunimum cast endcap off of the silencer is to clamp the endcap in a vice, and pull the silencer away from the cap. This too, can be a stubborn chore. Do not pry between the silencer shell and the endcap, or you could create an exhaust leak where the shell bends from the prying.

The shell can be removed by forcing the shell itself down, away from the silencer tip. Be sure to put a folded rag underneath the threads of the silencer so that they aren't damaged. If the shell is stubborn, you can slam the assembly down (threads facing down, of course), but again, be sure not to damage the threads.

This photo shows the silencer with the shell removed. The packing that covers the silencer core is usually hard and caked with oil deposits.

The silencer core is sandwiched between two halves of packing. The outer layer of the packing is almost like a tightly packed fiber that resembles a piece of foam pipe insulation. The inner layer of packing is a tangled bunch of thin wire, almost like steel wool. To remove the packing, simply pull it off of the core.

It is optional to clean the silencer core once you have the old packing removed. If you choose to clean it, brake cleaner and an abrasive pad work well. If you have nothing else, you can even use the old inner layer of packing to scrub the core with... If you were to put the core in with no packing, you'd realize that the packing really does silence a LOT of the sound that the tecnigas expansion chamber is capable of making.

The new inner layer of packing looks much different than the old one! Tuck the two bunches of packing on either side of the core.

Next, sandwich the inner layer of packing with the two outer layers of packing.

Now you're ready to slide the shell back on over the packing and the core. Be sure that the shell is oriented so that the tecnigas logo will be facing the right way when you put the silencer back on the expansion chamber!

Replace the endcap. Double check here, to make sure that none of the packing is pinced between the endcap and the shell.

The reassembled silencer. At this point you can rotate the shell so that the logo is aligned how you want it. When you're done, just press the endcap and shell firmly onto the core.

Mount the silencer to the expansion chamber. Don't forget the gasket that goes in between the two pieces.

Replace the silencer clamp, and tighten the 10mm bolt that holds it to the expansion chamber, and you're done!
