OK let me show you my ride.
This is how the bike looked when i bought it, it was brand new 2003 malaguti fireox DD
No wait, on this picture it has been modded already, a rear mudguard has been cut and stickers removed!
I didn't have a clue about 2 strokes back then..a variator? What the hell is that?
I rode it for a year and as since I was a mechanical engineering student I wanted to make the damn thing go faster.
Then I got a good deal on slightly used parts:
-due plus 70cc
-polini crank
-giannelli shot
I also bought a 21mm dellorto carb, multivar and polini 2g clutch. Thats how it looked after I cut the front panel to make it look more "naked".
Then two stokes got into my blood and I became addicted
I started to read everything about the two strokes, good bless the internet.
Then I wanted to go even faster and since my bike was a daily ride some high end parts woudn't have been a good choice, I couldn't have afforded them anyway.
September 2006...So I decided to make a little conversion. I sold my complete engine and bought a complete piaggio 180 engine off gilera runner 180 SP with exhaust and electrics and malossi cylinder head and multivar 2000 already fitted. It was a bargain and in very good condition.
Everyting was just fine except I had a little problem, how the hell am I going to fit that thing to my frame
Well not to mention I already got a lot of my egineering knowledge so I've told myself "I am gonna do it no matter what".
Since I've seen a few crappy conversions with 125/150/180 engines just bolted to the 50cc frame with very strong vibrations, I knew I have to make it the right way.
Then I got a wrecked runner 180 frame and cut engine mount off it, and bought a runner 180 subframe.
I also bought a SR50 paioli shocker which I am gonna modify to fit the new engine, minarelli vforce3 and other small bits.
Here are the pics of the building process which took about 6 months. Little by little...
Time to make a frame jig.
Welded by a pro.
I also modified cylinder and an exhaust header a bit.
Port timing being checked.
April 2007...OK the frame was finished and bike almost ready to be started for the first time.
A wheelbase went from 127.5 cm to 131.5 cm...
Frame painted.
Wheels and handle bar powdercoated....
Aerox front wheel with a 250mm TJT brake disk....sweet
Then I had to modify runner wiring loom to fit my bike, oh man, that took me a few days, millions of wires coming from everywhere
OK bike running, lights and all electric stuff working, yeah baby!!!
Then I decided to make it a bit faster, I ported the cylinder and fitted a 28mm OKO carb.
October 2007....Weather was getting colder and colder and I wasn't happy with the OKO carb, sold it and put a stock carb and airbox back on, I didnt like the noise of an open filter anyway.
Then I bought some more parts: honda cr85 vforce2 reed cage, cr85 manifold and a genuine keihin pwk 28.
And that's it. Now I am waiting to start working on it again. In the meanwhile I sold a keihin carb and bought a brand new keihin carb
An airbox will be also heavily modded for the big carb.
I also designed adapter plates for the reed cage and intake manifold I will need but might change them a bit until I decide on final versions...
Legal issues:
Do I have a valid registration for the bike...YES and it involved some heavy corruption as 50cc scooters in Croatia are registered as mopeds and should be restricted to 50 kph which is checked on a "dyno" (it is not a dyno as it reads speed only) every year when your registration is to be renewed.
well is the bike street legal now...NO...do I still ride it almost every day....YES ...why?
Thats because the worst thing that can happen is to get a fine of $100-200 for having an unrestricted scooter. Then you have to put the restrictions back and then they check it for not running faster than 50 kph and you get a registration again.
Since I've built the bike I've been pulled over by the cops only once and they asked for licence and registration without even asking anything about the bike. Lot of them don't care for the bike as long as you have valid licence and registrations and dont make a lot of noise.
But some of them are pain in the ass and if they suspect that bike is faster than 50 kph they can take your plate and then you have to do the registration process again as described above.
Sometimes they use a mobile "dyno", pull the mopeds over and check for the max speed, but that happens very rarely.
I did some inquiry for registering the bike as a motorcyle but it's very complicated, and for now I'll keep riding like this, if they stop me and take my plate I'll see what I can do about it.
Well, this is the story of me and my bike and how I get hooked to two strokes
I hope you'll like it gentlemen |

Very nice! I have a feeling you will encounter the police too often to not get it properly registered.
Are you using Solid Works? That does not look like Inventor.

I've always admired your Malaguti! Excellent scoot, and I like what you've done with it. I'll be nobody in Croatia has a scoot like that one! Nice template for the exhaust port. Was that Tom's Tuning Tools? I never did play with it much, but looks handy!
Keep us posted on any updates!
Cheers,
~Josh |

Yeah nobody here has a scoot like that that's for sure You are right, a template was made with TTT, it''s very handy indeed but too bad it doesn't have an option for designing a bridged exhaust port.
Scotertrog, I use CATIA V5R16 for CAD.
Well, thanks for the nice comments guyz |

Malaguti's were always my favorite design - just beautiful scooters. It's a real shame they don't import them here anymore.
What is your top speed with this new set-up? I rode a friends 172cc (Malossi) Italjet Dragster last spring that I gps'd @ 84 mph.

I really don't know about the top speed because my bicycle speedo shows crazy values after 90 kph.
Might GPS it soon. |

A little update.
I bet you know how crappy 50cc scooter lights are, my bike stock had 2x15 watt bulbs. I got a SR 150 metal lens which has a 55 watt bulb. A bit of grinding and drilling and here it is
