As you've probably seen in my details I'm on he other side of the pacific from most of you. I have 3 scooters - an '02 SR50 Di-Tech & 2x Vmoto Monza's (an '05 & '06). In the US the QJ Pitbull seems to be the same scooter, but I'm not sure whether the engine internalss are identical.
Anyhoooo.....
First thing I did after purchased my First Monza was have the pipe changed for a Gianelli unit & also had a Malossi Multivar fitted. This took the scooter form being "ok" in traffic to "oh yeah" I can actually keep up with everything. Mechanically this was the extent of the modifications & I was happy to ride it this way.....except for one gripe....the headlights.......someone likened it to "a candle in the wind". So I solved that quick smart:
before:
As it turns the chinese are not so stupid when it comes to building scooters (sometimes).....they cheated & modelled the headlight unit off the SR50 & the tail light from an Aerox. Simple solution was to get one of the quartz halogen headlight kits from Germany......well....in theory it was. Installed them and was immediately dissapointed with the light quality. Furthermore the SR50's don't have a hi/lo beam so a double downer.
Not being one to suffer defeat, I went looking for a light substitue & it appear in the form of a pair of automotive driving lights that accept H4 globes. Now to fit the suckers. As it turn out I was in luck.......the quartz units have a ring that pops out & with some careful grining on the back the holes were a perfect fit! So the units are mounted & I take it for it's first test ride........like driving a car that's how much difference there was.....except no difference between hi & lo beam.
I spoke with a shop & they advised not to go higher than a 35w globe as the harness would not cope with the extra current required. Turns out I need not have worried.......becasue the lights were a projector style, inside the cases just behind the lense was a metal strip designed to restrict the light through the lense. Removed it form one of them & voila - full height beam achieved!
after:
And here is the end result (there was a gate in the way so the beam is narrower than actually what it is)
Low beam:
High beam:

Cool! My first scooter was one similar to yours. Marshin "Area 51" as it's called over here. The MZ Mosquito is the most popular bike of that style that I'm aware of in the states. It's looking pretty cool so far.
Here's what mine looked like: (I used a link instead of photo as to not draw attention from your thread)

So those headlights are from an older SR50? Damn, I wouldn't have thought.

So after a while, and an extensive amount of night riding I found a bit of a design fault with the instrument layout......the side lighting did not really offer very good illumination of the speedo, & the high beam warning light was that bright that it was actually a distraction.
As it turned out a friend with a Vmoto Matrix (yes same as the Keeway Matrix) showed me his cluster layout & as it happened it was a direct plug & play replacement for mine. The fact it was a completely different shape to mine did not worry me - when you grow up with a father who plays with boats as his hobby you learn not to fear a bit of fibreglassing. With that in mind I scored an awesome ebay win
- a Vmoto Monaco cluster - exact same cluster as the Matrix except it reads to 140kmh and...wait for it....has an EL illuminated face!! And what's more, while the Monaco is a 125 4T it still uses the same wiring loom, so it plugged straight in! The only downside is I don't have a oil warning light, but I have done a wire trace & know where to wire one it.
Here is a photo of the standard Moza instruments so you can see what I started with:
So I have the cluster & thinking the easist way would be to get the rest of a Monaco upper binacle......back to shop where they had a Monaco clone (SCP Runna) that they were about to throw out......though not before they allowed me to pich what I needed off it. Got it home & found the first problem......it was a completely different shape to mine......that's ok... just grab the bottom piece as well......uh oh...not going to work becasue the Monaco bars are wider......well....out with the dremel & started cutting:
Wasn't too hard a job in the end. Now just a case of glassing in & shaping.
Here's what they look like at night when illuminated:
I haven't done much work to it lately......couldn't help myself & installed it on the scooter & have been using it ever since in it's unfinished state. As soon as it's finished & painted I'll put more pics in this thread post. |

Just for you Josh
This shot was taken before I'd finished converting to the car lights. (you can see one side converted)

Ok....so with the niggling faults looked after time to have some fun......engine upgrade! Being a heavy rider I knew from the start a top end screamer was not going to be right for me - I do a lot of twisty mountain riding as well as commuting, so I needed something that would have enough torque that it would not bog down on the corners and up the hills. To simple answer - capacity.
Below are pics of the build which is still in progress. As soon as I have more time I'll update this with a writeup.

That VMoto cluster has the same shape as the CPI Hussar/Oliver cluster. Different mounts though.
Nice work on the lights and can't wait to see how your build goes! |

| I just had to say how much I respect the CAN DO attitude. Your no fear mods are quite well executed. |

Hey guys, thanks for the words of encouragement - it's great to hear it from others who know & understand what "customising" is all about. Most people I ride with just look & think "why bother.....it's only a cheap Chinese scooter".......I can't think of a better reason to customise it.....because it is cheap to do & invariably it's actually improving on the little faults that you get when you buy something thats built to a price.
BTW - pics are up of the cluster & headlights at night. |

Thought I'd get a little bit more done today. Dummy fitted the fan shrouds...and....uh oh......problem!!!! While the barrel fits inside the shrouds, the new height caused an issue ......Oh well.....just anouther excuse to pull out the glassing tools......
Haven't finshed yet......bit of an issue with the resin bonding to the plastic the shroud is made from - not sure if it's just release agent or the resin I'm using is incompatible. Either way, have a solution up my sleeve.
I'm only doing this as a temp fix until I can get my hands on a BWS 100 or Jog 90 shroud (they're not so common down here ) |

Thanks Jon - I may take you up on the offer. I'm lucky in that where I live, just down the road is the biggest concentration of motorcycle dealerships in the city - one being a Yamaha dealer. Will see what they can come up with & let you know. |

| A gallon of West Systems Epoxy will get you through ALL of the plastic mods you can do on a scoot. Rough up the surface w/ 80 grit, and you are good to go. |
